Helen Malherbe has 15 years of experience as a science communicator, both in the international development sector as well with nationally & locally based programmes. With an academic background in the natural sciences field, this foundation enables a good grasp of a range of scientific disciplines, but with a preference for the biological sciences. Helen’s area of expertise lies in communicating complex science issues in an understandable manner to the layperson, using the appropriate language, pitch and relevance to everyday issues to bring them to life. This is done with passion and enthusiasm, communicating the message whilst ensuring the scientific integrity is maintained, thus bridging the divide between the researcher and the public. As Helen herself says, “the thing I love the most is explaining complex concepts in a simple, understandable way to someone with no previous background or understanding of the issues – and seeing them understand!”
